Can You Turn Off Meta AI? What Works in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger
There's no off switch for Meta AI, but you can hide its chat, block it from private conversations and keep sensitive details out of it.

No, you can’t completely turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Messenger; it’s built into the search bars and chat screens and there is no switch to remove it. What you can do is mute or delete the Meta AI chat, turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for sensitive WhatsApp chats, avoid tagging @Meta AI, and, depending on where you live, object to Meta using your data for AI.
Here’s what each option actually does and what it doesn’t.
What Meta AI can and can’t see
A common worry is that Meta AI reads all your messages. It doesn’t work that way. Your personal WhatsApp chats stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI only sees what is sent to it: messages in your chat with Meta AI, messages where someone in a group tags @Meta AI, and content you forward or share with it. Those messages are processed by Meta, so treat anything you send to Meta AI as shared with the company.
Since December 2025, Meta has used people’s interactions with Meta AI to personalize the ads and content they see across its apps in most regions. The EU, the UK and South Korea were reported as exceptions when the change was announced. Reports at the time said there was no dedicated opt-out for this in the US.
Your options at a glance
| What you want | Possible? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Remove Meta AI from the app | No | Not offered in any Meta app |
| Hide the Meta AI chat | Yes | Mute, archive or delete the chat |
| Stop Meta AI being used in a specific WhatsApp chat | Partly | Advanced Chat Privacy for that chat |
| Hide the Meta AI button in search | No | Just ignore it and search normally |
| Object to your data being used for AI | Depends on region | Meta Privacy Center forms |
Mute, archive or delete the Meta AI chat
- Open the Meta AI chat from your chat list (or tap the blue ring icon).
- Tap the name at the top to open chat info.
- Choose Mute to silence it, or go back to the chat list and swipe (iPhone) or long-press (Android) the chat to Archive or Delete it.
Deleting the chat clears it from your phone. The blue Meta AI button in the Chats tab stays; WhatsApp has publicly defended keeping it visible.
Turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for sensitive chats
This setting works per chat, and it’s off by default.
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the chat or group name at the top.
- Tap Advanced Chat Privacy and switch it on.
When it’s on, participants can’t export the chat, media isn’t auto-saved to their phones, and some Meta AI features are limited in that chat. The digital-rights group EFF notes that it doesn’t fully block people from mentioning Meta AI, and in groups other members can change the setting, so it’s a deterrent rather than a guarantee.
Instagram, Facebook and Messenger
On Instagram and Facebook, Meta AI sits in the search bar and in your messages. You can’t remove it, but you can:
- Search without it: type your search and pick a regular result (accounts, tags, places) instead of the “Ask Meta AI” suggestion.
- Mute the Meta AI conversation in Instagram DMs or Messenger: open the chat, tap the name, and choose Mute.
- Delete the conversation from your inbox if you’ve chatted with it.
- Skip AI suggestions in comments, captions and image editing; they only run when you tap them.
Image prompts and /imagine: what’s shared
Meta AI can create images from text prompts, including via the /imagine command in chats where it’s available. Keep in mind:
- Your prompt and any photo you upload are sent to Meta to process.
- In a group chat, everyone in the group can see the prompt and the result.
- Don’t upload photos of other people, especially children, or images containing documents, addresses or screens with personal data.
In the standalone Meta AI app, check whether a prompt or image is set to be shared publicly before you post it. Some users have accidentally published conversations to the app’s public feed.
Object to Meta using your data for AI
Meta’s Privacy Center includes forms about how your information is used for AI. What’s available depends on where you live:
- EU and UK: data protection laws give you a right to object. Meta has offered a form to object to the use of your public content and AI interactions for training.
- US and most other regions: there’s no general opt-out from AI training on your own activity. Meta has offered a form to request changes involving your information from third parties used in AI, and says it reviews requests under local law.
An objection generally affects future use only. Separate accounts may need separate requests unless they’re linked in Accounts Center.
What never to tell Meta AI
- Passwords, verification codes or PINs (see our guide to two-factor authentication for why codes should never be shared)
- Bank, card or Social Security numbers
- Health details about yourself or others
- Screenshots of private conversations with other people
Bottom line
Meta AI is a permanent fixture in Meta’s apps for now. Mute or delete its chat, use Advanced Chat Privacy in sensitive WhatsApp conversations, don’t tag it, and treat anything you send it as visible to Meta. FAQ
Can Meta AI read my private WhatsApp messages?
No. Personal chats remain end-to-end encrypted. Meta AI only processes messages sent to it, messages where it’s tagged, and content you share with it.
Will deleting the Meta AI chat delete Meta’s copy?
Not necessarily. Deleting the chat removes it from your device. Check Meta’s Privacy Center and the Meta AI settings in your app for options to delete AI conversation data held by Meta.
Does Advanced Chat Privacy stop Meta AI completely?
No. It restricts exports, auto-downloads and some AI features in that chat, but in groups other members can change it, so it isn’t a full block.
Can I use WhatsApp without ever touching Meta AI?
Yes. Meta AI only responds when you open its chat, tap its button or tag it. If you never do, it won’t take part in your conversations.
