The easiest way to use a PS4 (DualShock 4) or PS5 (DualSense) controller on Windows is to connect it by USB cable or Bluetooth and play through Steam, which supports PlayStation controllers natively through Steam Input. For games outside Steam that only recognize Xbox controllers, a free community tool such as DS4Windows can make your PlayStation pad appear as an Xbox controller. Many newer PC games also support PlayStation controllers on their own, so try the game first before installing anything.

Why PlayStation controllers need a little help on PC

Windows recognizes a DualShock 4 or DualSense as a generic “Wireless Controller.” The catch is that most PC games are built around Microsoft’s XInput standard, which is what Xbox controllers use. A PlayStation pad speaks a different language, so games either support it directly, rely on a translation layer like Steam Input, or ignore it.

Your options at a glance

Method Works for Pros Cons
Native game support Games that list PlayStation controller support Correct button icons; on some titles, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers Not every game supports it; advanced features often require USB
Steam Input Steam games (and non-Steam games added to your library) Built in, no extra drivers, per-game remapping Only active while the game runs through Steam
DS4Windows (community tool) Any game that supports Xbox controllers System-wide, lots of customization Extra drivers to install; unofficial; can cause double input

Step 1: Connect the controller

Option A: USB cable (simplest)

  1. Use a data-capable cable: micro-USB for a DualShock 4, USB-C for a DualSense. Many cheap cables are charge-only and will not work.
  2. Plug the controller into the PC. Windows installs it automatically within a few seconds.
  3. To confirm, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices (Windows 10) and look for “Wireless Controller.”

Option B: Bluetooth

  1. Put the controller into pairing mode. On a DualShock 4, hold the PS and Share buttons together until the light bar flashes rapidly. On a DualSense, hold PS and Create until the light around the touchpad blinks.
  2. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  3. Select Wireless Controller. If asked for a PIN, try 0000.
  4. When the light bar turns solid, you are connected.

Microsoft’s general Bluetooth pairing instructions are at support.microsoft.com.

Step 2: Play through Steam (recommended)

  1. Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Controller.
  2. Turn on PlayStation controller support (the exact label has changed over Steam versions). Your controller should appear in the list once connected.
  3. Launch a game. Steam translates your controller into whatever the game expects.
  4. To change button layouts for one game, open it in your Library, click the controller icon or the gear icon, and choose Controller Layout (labels vary slightly by Steam version).

Tip: For games bought elsewhere, you can add them to Steam via Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library and launch them from Steam so Steam Input applies. This does not work with every launcher or anti-cheat system.

Step 3 (optional): Use DS4Windows for non-Steam games

DS4Windows is a free, open-source utility that makes Windows treat your PlayStation controller as a virtual Xbox 360 controller, so games that only support XInput will accept it. Keep a few things in mind:

  • It is a community project, not made by Sony or Microsoft. The original developer stopped working on it, and development has continued in community forks. Download only from the project’s official GitHub releases page, never from random “download” sites, which sometimes bundle malware.
  • It relies on a virtual gamepad driver called ViGEmBus, which the installer prompts you to add. Its developer has also retired that driver, so future Windows updates could break compatibility.
  • Your antivirus may flag unfamiliar drivers. Only proceed if the files come from the official source.

Basic DS4Windows setup

  1. Download the latest release from the project’s official GitHub page and extract the ZIP to a folder such as Documents\DS4Windows.
  2. Run DS4Windows.exe and choose where to save settings (the program folder or AppData).
  3. Follow the welcome screen prompt to install the ViGEmBus driver, then restart if asked.
  4. Connect your controller. It should appear on the Controllers tab with a battery reading.
  5. Use the Profiles tab to remap buttons, adjust stick dead zones, or change the light bar color.

Leave DS4Windows running while you play. Close it when you play Steam games, or turn off Steam’s PlayStation support, so the two do not fight over the controller.

Troubleshooting

Controller not detected over USB

  • Swap to a known data cable and try a different USB port, ideally one directly on the PC rather than a hub.
  • Unpair the controller from your PlayStation console if it keeps reconnecting there.

Bluetooth keeps disconnecting or lagging

  • Remove the controller in Bluetooth settings and pair again. For more pairing fixes, see Bluetooth not connecting.
  • Move closer to the PC; built-in laptop Bluetooth antennas can be weak, and USB 3 ports can cause interference with nearby dongles.
  • Reset the controller: on a DualShock 4 or DualSense, press the small reset button in the pinhole on the back with a straightened paper clip for a few seconds, then pair again.

Every button press happens twice

This is double input: the game sees both your real controller and the virtual Xbox controller. Close DS4Windows when using Steam Input, or turn on DS4Windows’ option to hide the original controller (it uses a companion tool called HidHide).

DualSense rumble or adaptive triggers not working

These advanced features need the game to support them natively, and in many games they work only over a USB connection, not Bluetooth.

Controller firmware

Sony offers a PlayStation Accessories app for Windows that can update DualSense controller firmware; check Sony’s support site for current device support.

Bottom line

Plug in or pair your PS4 or PS5 controller, then let Steam handle it whenever you can; it is built in and needs no extra drivers. Use DS4Windows only for games outside Steam that refuse to recognize a PlayStation controller, download it solely from its official GitHub page, and close it when using Steam to avoid double input.

FAQ

Does a PS4 controller work on Windows without any software?

Windows recognizes it, and games with native PlayStation support will work. Games that only support Xbox controllers need Steam Input or a tool like DS4Windows.

Is DS4Windows safe?

The open-source project itself is widely used, but it is unofficial and installs a virtual driver. Get it only from its official GitHub releases page and keep Windows security features turned on.

Can I use a PS5 controller the same way?

Yes. Steam supports the DualSense natively, and DS4Windows-based tools also work with it, though haptics and adaptive triggers depend on game support.

Do I need a Bluetooth adapter?

Only if your PC lacks Bluetooth. Most laptops have it built in; many desktops do not. A USB cable always works as an alternative.
