Hidden Work Mode Tile Found in Android Auto Hints at Work Profile Support
A teardown of Android Auto 18.0.664204 found an inactive Work Mode tile, suggesting Google may be testing Work Profile support. Google has not confirmed any plans.

Code inside Android Auto version 18.0.664204 points to a possible Work Mode feature. Android Authority dug into the app and managed to make a tile appear with a briefcase icon above the app drawer, but it did not respond to taps. That suggests Google may be experimenting with support for Android Work Profiles in the car. The company has made no announcement and has given no timing.
Why work apps do not show up today
A Work Profile is a separate area on your phone where apps managed by your employer live, each marked with a briefcase badge. Personal apps and data on a phone you own stay outside the company’s control. If your app drawer has Personal and Work tabs, or badged apps, you likely have one. If not, you probably do not, and Settings > Passwords and accounts can confirm it.
Video meetings show the gap clearly. Microsoft says Teams handles audio calls and meetings on Android Auto, yet that stops working once the app sits inside a managed Work Profile. With Google Meet, a call already under way in a Work Profile can show on the dashboard, but that profile’s upcoming meetings and call history stay hidden.
What Work Mode could become
One possibility is an easier way to join a call on the road. Another is a switch that mutes work alerts on the way home while leaving personal calls and maps running. Neither is confirmed: the tile has not been seen pausing notifications or opening work apps.
What you can do today
- If your employer has set up a Work Profile, use the Work tab in the app drawer to pause those apps. Some devices also offer a work tile in Quick Settings. Pausing silences work apps and their alerts and leaves personal apps alone.
- Certain Android phones let you schedule work hours in Digital Wellbeing, though Samsung’s version has not had the option. Google says a schedule cannot hold work apps paused across consecutive days, such as a full weekend, so the manual switch still helps.
- If an app is simply missing in the car, make sure you did not hide it in the Android Auto launcher. If the whole system fails, look at the connection first. Neither problem involves Work Profiles.
Why it matters
Commuters who live on calls may welcome the change, while others may not want work following them into the car. Even with the feature, access will have limits. Android Auto restricts what apps can do while you drive, and employers choose which apps appear in a Work Profile. On company-owned Android devices, administrators can cap how long a profile stays paused, and passing that cap may cut off personal apps and data.
What is still unclear
Google has not said whether the tile will gain pause controls, and no release date exists. Hidden code in a teardown does not always reach users, so treat this as an early hint.
