Satellite Messaging on iPhone and Android: What Works, Which Phones, and What It Costs
Many recent phones can text or call for help via satellite when there's no cell signal. Here's what each platform offers and how to practice before you need it.

If you have an iPhone 14 or later, you can already text via satellite in the US when there’s no cell or Wi-Fi signal, and contact emergency services with Emergency SOS via satellite. On Android, Pixel 9 and later phones (except the Pixel 9a) offer Satellite SOS, and some phones on certain carriers can also send regular texts via satellite. T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service adds satellite texting to many recent phones, including on other carriers’ plans, for a monthly fee.
Satellite connections are slow and work only outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Practice with a demo before you head somewhere remote.
What satellite features can do
- Emergency SOS via satellite: text emergency services when you can’t call. Your phone asks a few questions and sends your answers and location.
- Satellite texting: send and receive ordinary messages to friends and family off the grid.
- Location sharing: share where you are, for example through Find My on iPhone.
- Limited apps and data: some newer services support a small set of apps over satellite. This is not normal internet.
Messages can take from several seconds to minutes to send, and you may need to point the phone toward the satellite.
iPhone: what you get
| Feature | Phones | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency SOS via satellite | iPhone 14 and later | US and many other countries |
| Messages via satellite (iMessage and SMS) | iPhone 14 and later on iOS 18 or later | US, Canada, Mexico and Japan (per Apple, as of October 2026) |
| Find My via satellite | iPhone 14 and later | Supported countries |
| Roadside Assistance via satellite | iPhone 14 and later | US and some other countries |
Cost: Apple includes these features free for a period after you activate a new iPhone and has repeatedly extended that free period. In September 2026 it extended free access again for eligible iPhone 14, 15 and 16 models. Apple hasn’t announced what, if anything, it will charge afterward. Satellite features aren’t offered on iPhones bought in some countries.
How to try it on iPhone
- Go outside with a clear view of the sky.
- For the general demo, open Control Center, tap the Cellular button, tap Satellite, then Try Demo. Choose Try Connecting to Satellite or Try Emergency SOS.
- For Messages, Apple also offers a Satellite Connection Demo under Settings > Apps > Messages.
The demo doesn’t contact emergency services. Apple’s details are on its Messages via satellite support page.
Android: Pixel, Galaxy and others
Google Pixel
Google says Satellite SOS works on all Pixel phones since the Pixel 9, except the Pixel 9a, in supported countries including the US. It’s designed for emergencies only and uses Google Messages as the messaging app. The LTE version of the Pixel Watch 4 also offers Satellite SOS in the US. Google has said satellite SOS is free for an initial period; check the Pixel help page for current terms.
To try the demo: Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS, then follow the demo steps. Your mobile network turns off during the demo and comes back afterward. See Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS help page.
Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones
Satellite support on Android depends on both the phone’s hardware and your carrier. For example, Verizon has offered satellite emergency and text messaging on compatible phones such as the Galaxy S25 series and Pixel 9 series, through its partner Skylo. Other carriers, including some cable-company mobile services, have announced similar features. Check your carrier’s satellite page for the current list of supported phones.
T-Mobile T-Satellite
T-Satellite is T-Mobile’s satellite texting service, built with Starlink. Instead of a special satellite chip, it lets many standard recent phones connect directly to satellites in areas without cell coverage.
- Who can use it: T-Mobile customers, and customers of other carriers who sign up for it separately, if their phone is supported. You need a compatible phone with eSIM support, and for non-T-Mobile customers it runs as a separate line alongside your main plan.
- Cost: included on some higher-end T-Mobile plans; otherwise around $10 a month as of October 2026. T-Mobile has said the price may change.
- What it does: text messages, picture messages, location sharing, texting 911, and a limited set of satellite-ready apps with low-speed data. It isn’t a replacement for normal cellular service.
- Phones: T-Mobile lists dozens of supported iPhone, Pixel, Galaxy and Motorola models. Check its compatibility list or IMEI checker before signing up.
Tips for using satellite features
- Try calling 911 first. Even without your carrier’s signal, an emergency call may connect through another network. Apple and Google both recommend this.
- Go outside. Satellite connections don’t work well indoors, under thick trees, or in deep canyons.
- Follow the on-screen pointer. Phones show which direction to turn to stay connected.
- Keep messages short. Satellite bandwidth is tiny; compressed messages send faster.
- Keep your battery up. Searching for satellites uses power; carry a charged power bank on trips.
- Share your trip plan with someone before you leave, and know where you’ll have coverage.
A dedicated satellite messenger or personal locator beacon may still make sense for frequent backcountry travel, since phones depend on battery life and supported regions. If your phone goes missing on a trip, our guide on how to find a lost phone explains what to do.
Bottom line
Check whether your phone already supports satellite features: iPhone 14 and later do, as do Pixel 9 and later (except 9a), and some other Android phones through carriers or T-Satellite. Run the demo outdoors before your next trip, and remember these tools are a backup for when there’s truly no signal, not a replacement for planning.
FAQ
Does satellite texting work indoors?

Do I need a special plan for iPhone satellite features?
No. On eligible iPhones, Apple’s satellite features currently work without a carrier plan add-on during Apple’s free period.
Can I make voice calls via satellite?
Not on most phones today. Most consumer satellite features are text-based, with some services adding limited app data.
Is T-Satellite available if I’m not with T-Mobile?
Yes, T-Mobile has offered it to customers of other carriers who have a compatible, unlocked eSIM phone, for a monthly fee.
