How to Screen Record on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac (Built-In Tools Only)
You don't need to download anything to record your screen. Here's how to do it with the tools already on your phone or computer.

Every major platform has a free, built-in screen recorder. On iPhone, use the Screen Recording button in Control Center; on Android, use the Screen record tile in Quick Settings; on Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + R to record with the Snipping Tool; and on a Mac, press Shift + Command + 5.
Below are step-by-step instructions for each, along with how to include your voice and where the recordings end up.
Quick reference
| Device | How to start | Mic audio | Saved to |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad | Control Center > Screen Recording | Long-press the button > Microphone | Photos app |
| Android | Quick Settings > Screen record | Choose in the start dialog | Photos / Gallery (Movies or DCIM folder) |
| Windows 11 | Windows + Shift + R (Snipping Tool) | Toggle mic in the toolbar | Videos > Screen Recordings |
| Mac | Shift + Command + 5 | Options > Microphone | Desktop (by default) |
How to screen record on iPhone or iPad
Add the button (one time)
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Touch and hold an empty area, then tap Add a Control.
- Find Screen Recording and tap it to add it.
On iOS 17 and earlier, the button is added from Settings > Control Center instead.
Record
- Open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording button. A three-second countdown starts.
- To record your voice too, touch and hold the button first, turn on Microphone, then tap Start Recording.
- To stop, tap the red indicator at the top of the screen and choose Stop, or tap the button in Control Center again.
The video is saved to the Photos app. Notifications that arrive during recording will be captured, so turn on a Focus mode (such as Do Not Disturb) first if you’re recording something to share.
How to screen record on Android
Most phones running Android 11 or later include a recorder. Names vary slightly by brand.
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the full Quick Settings panel.
- Tap Screen record (on Samsung Galaxy phones it’s called Screen recorder). If you don’t see it, tap the pencil or edit icon and drag the tile into the panel.
- Choose your audio source: no sound, media (device audio), microphone, or both. On recent Pixel and other phones you can also choose to record a single app instead of the whole screen.
- Tap Start. After a short countdown, recording begins.
- To stop, swipe down and tap the recording notification, or tap the stop button in the floating toolbar on Samsung phones.
Recordings appear in Google Photos or the Gallery app. Samsung’s recorder also has settings for video quality and a selfie-camera overlay; long-press the tile to see them.
How to screen record on Windows 11
Option 1: Snipping Tool (best for most people)
- Press Windows + Shift + R, or open Snipping Tool and select the video camera icon.
- Drag to select the area you want to record (or the whole screen).
- Use the toolbar to turn the microphone and system audio on or off.
- Click Start. When you’re done, click the stop button.
- Preview the clip, then save it. By default, recordings go to Videos > Screen Recordings as MP4 files.
If the shortcut doesn’t work, update Snipping Tool through the Microsoft Store; screen recording arrived in a 2023 update of the app. For still images, see how to take a screenshot on any computer.
Option 2: Xbox Game Bar (for apps and games)
Press Windows + Alt + R to start and stop recording the active window, or press Windows + G to open Game Bar and use the Capture widget. Game Bar records a single app window rather than the desktop or File Explorer, so the Snipping Tool is better for tutorials. Clips are saved to Videos > Captures.
How to screen record on a Mac
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion.
- Click Options to pick a microphone, set a timer, change where the file is saved, or show mouse clicks.
- Click Record.
- To stop, click the stop button in the menu bar or press Command + Control + Esc.
A thumbnail appears in the corner; click it to trim or share, or let it save automatically (to the Desktop by default). Apple’s step-by-step guide is on its Mac support site.
The first time you record, macOS may ask you to allow screen recording permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. You can also record with QuickTime Player via File > New Screen Recording, which opens the same toolbar.
Recording computer sound on a Mac
The built-in tool records your microphone but generally not the Mac’s own audio output. To capture system audio, you’d need a third-party audio driver or an app that supports it. Keep it simple if you only need narration.
Why some recordings come out black or silent
Streaming services and some banking or messaging apps block screen capture to protect copyrighted content or private data. You’ll get a black screen or no sound, and that’s intentional. Don’t try to bypass it: recording and sharing copyrighted shows or movies without permission isn’t allowed. If you need a clip of your own content, export it from the app you created it in.
Tips for better recordings
- Silence notifications with Do Not Disturb or Focus before you start.
- Close unrelated tabs and apps so personal information doesn’t appear on screen.
- Check storage. Long recordings at high resolution can take up several gigabytes.
- Ask permission before recording video calls or other people; recording laws vary by state.
Bottom line
You don’t need a third-party app for everyday screen recording. Control Center on iPhone, the Quick Settings tile on Android, Windows + Shift + R on Windows 11 and Shift + Command + 5 on Mac cover tutorials, bug reports and quick demos with no extra downloads.
FAQ
Is there a time limit on built-in screen recording?
Generally no fixed limit; you’re limited by free storage and battery. Very long recordings may be easier to handle if you split them into shorter clips.
Why doesn’t my iPhone recording have sound?
App audio is recorded unless the app blocks it, but your voice is only captured if you long-press the Screen Recording button and turn on Microphone. Also check that the ringer switch or volume isn’t muting the app.
Can I record just one window on Windows 11?
Yes. Xbox Game Bar (Windows + Alt + R) records only the active app window. With the Snipping Tool, select a region around the window.
Does screen recording notify other people?
Some apps, like Snapchat, can notify others when you record. Most apps don’t, but it’s good practice to ask before recording a call.
