Nothing OS 5.0 on Android 17 Reaches Phone 3a and Phone 4a Owners
Nothing is sending its Android 17-based OS 5.0 to the Phone 3a and 4a families, with new camera tools, a Glyph app and a translucent theme. Here is how to check.

Nothing began rolling out its Nothing OS 5.0 update, built on Android 17, to the Phone 3a and Phone 4a series on October 30. According to 9to5Google, the update covers the Phone 3a, Phone 3a Pro, Phone 4a and Phone 4a Pro. It arrives a few weeks after the flagship Phone 3 received the same software.
A staggered rollout, so you may not see it yet
Nothing says the release is “staggered”, meaning it reaches owners in batches rather than all at once. Android Central noted that many people replying to Nothing’s community posts had not received it yet, including a lot of people who had been in the beta program. If your phone has not offered it, that is normal for now.
You do not have to wait for a notification. 9to5Google describes the manual route: open system settings, scroll to System, tap System updates, then press the check for updates button. Its writer noted that their own Phone 4a Pro had not received the update at the time of writing, so a failed check does not mean something is wrong.
What is new in the update
Beyond the Android 17 foundation, the update adds a fair amount of Nothing’s own work:
- Glyph app: the Glyph Interface features move into a dedicated app with a reworked layout.
- Split Quick Settings: notifications and Quick Settings can be separated, similar to the approach on iOS.
- Home screen tools: bulk icon management makes it easier to rearrange apps, and three new widgets are included: Collector, Away Time and Glyph Timer.
- Look and feel: a Translucent theme works across the system, there are more lock screen options, and a new typeface called Geist, which Nothing calls “cleaner and easier to scan”.
- AI privacy indicator: a yellow AI Processing status light appears when the phone is handling potentially sensitive AI data.
Camera changes differ by model
Both series get a refreshed camera interface with updated controls, feedback and animations. The details then split. On the Phone 3a series, Nothing’s patch notes list improved video creation with Filters and Tuning, plus Dual-view Video. The tuning feature offers seven adjustable effects and a reset option, and editing presets have been upgraded.
For the Phone 4a, Dual-view Video lets you record with the front and rear cameras at the same time. The Phone 4a also gets a faster Essential Voice transcription, which Nothing describes as having reduced latency. Android Central adds that the Phone 4a Pro receives similar changes, along with additional updates for the base Phone 4a.
Why it matters for owners
A major Android version is the point at which phones often gain the most visible changes, and midrange models do not always receive them quickly. Here, the Phone 3a and 4a families are following the Phone 3 within a matter of weeks. The practical gains are mostly everyday ones: a more organized home screen, better customization and new ways to shoot video. The AI Processing indicator is also useful if you want to know when your phone is working with sensitive data.
The Phone 3 update also brought improvements to Nothing’s Essential AI tools. Nothing says Smart Collections can now “suggest and organize content for you automatically”, and real-time transcription has been improved. Android Central describes the same AI changes as mirrored on the Phone 4a and Phone 4a Pro.
What to do next
If you own one of these phones, there is no need to hunt for a download. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi, charge it, and check for updates now and again over the next few days. It is sensible to back up your photos and important files before installing any major update. The sources do not give a date by which everyone will have the update, so how long the batches take is still unknown.
