Google Home Update Fixes Gemini Voice Commands and Older Nest Gear
Google's latest Home release improves Gemini voice commands, adds Matter energy readouts and ships fixes for Nest speakers, Wifi routers, cameras and Chromecast.

Google has rolled out another update for Gemini for Home and the Google Home app, and it is the most extensive one in a series of biweekly releases that began a few months ago. Beyond voice assistant improvements, the release also brings fixes for Nest and Google Home speakers, Nest Wifi, the Google TV streamer, Chromecast and older Nest cameras.
Gemini gets better at everyday commands
The changes to Gemini for Home focus on reliability. The assistant should now do a better job of understanding requests to move music from one room to another. Google also aims to cut down on “Sorry, I did not understand” replies, which in some cases appeared even when nobody had spoken to the device.
On smart displays, Gemini should more reliably understand and trigger voice commands for YouTube TV. A bug that could set alarm and timer volumes to zero has been fixed, and in affected cases those volumes will now match the device volume. Volume requests are also more predictable: previously, asking Gemini to change the volume of a device in another room could adjust the speaker you were talking to if the intended device could not be found. Google says that behavior is fixed.
More useful Matter controls in the app
Matter is a smart home standard that lets devices from different brands work together. On Android, the Google Home app now recognizes specific Matter closure types on compatible devices, such as garage doors, gates, windows and cabinets, and shows the correct icon and controls for each.
Compatible Matter smart plugs and energy monitors will now show real-time power usage and cumulative energy consumption on device tiles and control screens. For the thermostat controller and Home View, Google is adding a shortcut to quickly switch to an energy-saving temperature before you leave the house. Android foldable phones should also get a better camera live view when the device is folded or unfolded.
Fixes for Nest speakers, routers and streamers
This time Google is also updating its hardware, and the source describes it as more than a general bug-fixing round:
- Chromecast with Google TV (HD and 4K): the August 2026 security patch, plus connectivity, streaming and display improvements.
- Nest Wifi router and point: new firmware with better mesh network resilience, DNS fallback and stability improvements.
- Google Home and Nest speakers: smoother streaming, less boomy bass and clearer playback at lower volumes. Fixes cover speaker groups that disappeared, Wi-Fi 7 connection failures and Bluetooth playback that paused after a resume command.
Older Nest cameras get attention too
Older Nest cameras that have been migrated to Google Home are also updated. Google improved Wi-Fi reconnection, fixed slow night vision activation on first-generation Nest Cams, and resolved audio sync problems and unexpected restarts on Nest Hello. The doorbell also gets better person and Familiar Face detection, while Nest Cam IQ models receive a status light fix.
Why it matters
Many of these fixes address small annoyances that people notice daily: a timer that is silent, a speaker group that vanishes, or music that will not follow you to the next room. The energy readouts and closure support also make the app more useful for people who already own compatible Matter gear. Owners of older Nest hardware benefit as well, since some of the fixes target products that have been around for years.
What to expect next
Google has been shipping these releases roughly every two weeks, so further changes are likely. The full list of changes is in Google’s own release notes. Rollouts like this usually reach devices gradually, and the source does not say exactly when each device will receive its update, so it may take a while before every item shows up on yours.
