How to Search Your Email in AOL Mail: Filters and Old Messages

AOL Mail search starts in the box at the top of your inbox. Here is how to narrow results by sender, date and attachment, and how to find old messages.

To search your email in AOL Mail, type a name, email address or word into the search box at the top of the mailbox and press Enter. AOL Mail then lists every matching message, and you can narrow the list with filters for sender, recipient, subject, folder, date and attachments. Old messages turn up the same way, as long as they were never deleted and emptied from Trash.

The same search exists in the AOL app on iPhone and Android, behind the magnifying glass icon. The steps below describe the web version at mail.aol.com, and the app works in a similar way.

Where is the search box in AOL Mail?

The search box sits at the top of the AOL Mail page, above the message list, and usually shows the words “Search mail”. Click inside it and start typing. AOL Mail suggests matching contacts and recent searches as you type, so you can pick a person from the list instead of finishing their address.

In the AOL app, open Mail, tap the magnifying glass and type your search. Results appear below the box, and tapping a message opens it as usual.

What can you type into AOL Mail search?

AOL Mail search matches words in the sender’s name and address, the subject line and the message body. Good starting points:

  • A person’s full email address, which gives more precise results than a first name shared by many contacts.
  • A company name, such as your bank, airline or utility, to pull up statements and receipts.
  • A word you remember from the subject line, like “invoice”, “booking” or “password”.
  • An order, ticket or account number copied from another document, which usually returns one or two exact matches.

Short, distinctive words work better than whole sentences. If a search returns too much, add a second word. If it returns nothing, remove words until results appear, and check the spelling of names.

How do you use the search filters?

After you run a search, AOL Mail shows options to narrow the results. Depending on the version of AOL Mail you see, these appear as buttons above the results or in a panel that opens from a small arrow or filter icon inside the search box. The usual options are:

  • From and To, to limit results to messages sent by or sent to a specific address.
  • Subject, to match only words in the subject line.
  • Has attachment, or a separate view for photos and documents, to find files people sent you.
  • Folder, to search only the Inbox, Sent, Archive or a folder you created.
  • Date, to limit results to a period when you know roughly when the message arrived.

Combining two filters, such as a sender plus “has attachment”, is often the fastest way to find a specific PDF or photo. Some versions also accept typed shortcuts such as from: followed by an address. If the box treats a shortcut as plain text and returns nothing, use the filter options instead.

How do you find old emails in AOL Mail?

Old emails stay searchable as long as they are still in your account, so start with a search for the sender or a word you remember and add a date filter for the right year. Searching for something unusual from the message, such as a street name, a product name or a reference number, works better than common words that appear in hundreds of newer emails.

If search does not help, open the folder where the message should be and change the sort order so the oldest messages come first, then scroll. Also look in:

  • Archive, if you or the app archived messages instead of deleting them.
  • Folders you created and may have forgotten, listed in the left-hand column.
  • Sent, if you replied to the message and only remember your own answer.
  • Spam and Trash, which some searches skip. Open these folders directly and search or scroll inside them.

Messages emptied from Trash, or removed automatically from Trash and Spam after a while, are gone from the account. AOL’s own help pages explain current recovery options.

Why is AOL Mail search not finding a message?

When AOL Mail search misses a message you know exists, the cause is usually one of these:

  • The sender used a different address from the one you searched, for example a “no-reply” address from a company.
  • The message is in Spam, Trash or a folder that the search did not include.
  • A filter from an earlier search is still active and hiding results. Clear all filters and search again.
  • The word is misspelled in the email itself, or the important text is inside an image or attachment rather than the message body.
  • The email went to another account. If you use more than one address, search each mailbox.

If search behaves strangely in a browser, sign out, clear the browser’s cache, sign back in and try again, or test the same search in the AOL app. The AOL Help site has current instructions for account and mail problems.

How can you make future searches easier?

A few habits make the next search quicker. Move receipts, travel bookings and account notices into folders with clear names, such as “Receipts” or “Taxes”. Delete newsletters you never read, so they stop crowding results. Save senders you hear from often as contacts, which makes AOL Mail suggest them as you type.

Be careful with messages that search turns up from unfamiliar senders. Fake delivery and bank notices often copy real company names, and the warning signs are the same ones covered in our guide on how to spot scam text messages. If spam keeps arriving because your address is listed online, removing your details from people-search sites can reduce how often it is found.

Quick answers

Does AOL Mail search include attachments?

AOL Mail can filter for messages that have attachments, and searching by sender or subject then finds the email carrying the file. Text inside a PDF or image may not be matched, so search for words in the email itself.

Can you search AOL Mail on your phone?

Yes. In the AOL app, open Mail and tap the magnifying glass at the top. The app supports searches by name, address and keyword, with filters similar to the web version.

Can you recover an email deleted from Trash?

Once a message is emptied from Trash, it no longer shows in search. Check Archive and other folders first, then consult AOL Help for the recovery options available to your account.

Why does search show only recent emails?

Results usually list the newest matches first. Scroll down, add a date filter for an earlier period, or use a more specific search term to bring older messages to the top.
